Democracy and Human Rights
Al Muntada Society organized a seminar on ‘Democracy and Recognition
of Human Rights’ attended by a group of politicians and human rights
activists, intellectuals and public figures. In his speech, Alzawawi
Bagura, lecturer in contemporary philosophy in the University of
Kuwait stated that adopting liberal democracy as a political system
contributes to the creation of a civil society and the separation
of religion from politics. According to Bagura, this and an increase
in personal freedoms would make the state and society fairer and
more progressive. He added that patriarchal societies suffocate
women’s rights and distort women’s images of themselves and their
identity.
